Here’s our proud momma and her cute little twins.

Kinja'd!!!

She was the last ewe we were 100% sure was pregnant. We have two others who are very maybe, and three more who definitely are not. This puts our lamb total at 75.

Damn. That's a lot.  I'm guessing at 75 you are not having the for pets.

Will they stay white, or will they darken up to look like mom as they age?

Is white better? I’d imagine it is easier to d ye later? Does the color say anything else about the characteristics of the wool?

the color says nothing about the texture or quality of the wool, you’re right that white is easier to dye, but there is also demand for “natural” color wool in the marketplace, so although white is more flexible, black is still quite saleable. These two will be for meat anyway, as they are cross-breeds between Blue-faced and Border Leicester, they will not be saleable as breeding stock, and unless they end up having particularly spectacular wool, we won’t be keeping them.

Hmm, was the cross breeding intentional? If so, what are the benefits?

When the ewes were still out on pasture we had the Borders and Blues separated, and we had a matching ram in with each sub-flock, when we moved them into the barn for the winter we moved our youngest Blue-Faced ram, Oliver, in with the ewes as he was (is) a younger, smaller ram and would be less competitive in the rams-only winter housing. As a result, he got to “bat cleanup” with any ewe who wasn’t already pregnant from our big Blue ram Fredd ie or our Border ram Bob B aaa-B laah.

They stay whatever color you dye them. As long as they breed true, the color will be passed down, although cross-breeding is a good way to get new colors without dye.

Not entirely averse to that idea. We have a spit and pit and plenty of parking...
